What Is Proper Lighting, Really?
Lighting isn't just illumination. It's biological information. Whether we're aware of it or not, the light we take in throughout the day plays a key role in determining our physical and mental well-being. The quality, colour temperature, and timing of light all send signals to the body that regulate everything from alertness to hormone production. Proper lighting means delivering the right kind of light at the right time - not simply hitting a lumen target.
The Circadian Rhythm: Your Body’s 24-Hour Blueprint
The circadian rhythm is the body's internal clock - a roughly 24-hour biological cycle that governs sleep, metabolism, hormone release, immune response, and more. It is coordinated by a master clock in the brain called the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), which takes its primary cue from light. Research links chronic misalignment to type 2 diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, depression, anxiety, and certain cancers. Every cell in the body has its own internal molecular clock, creating a complex network governing daily functions like sleep, metabolism, hormone release, and immune response — and anything that misaligns the timing of that overall rhythm creates a mismatch of signals that can facilitate disease.
